If you are shopping for a current Bosch e-bike, you will see the smart system mentioned everywhere — on displays, batteries and in the showroom. But what does it actually mean for your day-to-day riding?

In simple terms, the smart system is Bosch’s latest connected e-bike platform. Drive unit, battery, remote, display and smartphone app are designed to work together from the ground up, with over-the-air updates, custom riding modes and digital features like theft protection and navigation.

What is included?

• Drive unit — mid-motor assistance tuned through multiple sensors (see our drive unit guide)
• Battery — PowerTube or PowerPack options, including DualBattery on tour and cargo bikes (battery guide)
• Display / remote — Kiox, Purion or System Controller depending on the bike (display guide)
• ConnectModule — on-bike connectivity for online features and security
• eBike Flow app — setup, mode customisation, navigation and updates (app guide)

Why it matters on a test ride

Smart-system bikes feel smoother because assistance, shifting and braking systems share data. Gear-shift detection protects the drivetrain; walk assist helps in tight spaces; and you can often tailor support to match fitness or luggage.
