Bosch drive units sit at the crank, sensing your pedalling and adding power in proportion to effort, speed and the riding mode you select. The result feels natural rather than jerky — and because weight sits low and central, handling stays stable whether you are carrying children, panniers or a weekday laptop.
Mid-drive vs hub motor
Most premium e-bikes use a mid-drive motor at the bottom bracket. It works through your gears, so the motor stays in its efficient rpm range on steep hills and when fully loaded. Bosch also offers a hub motor (Hub Line) for urban builds where simplicity and low maintenance matter most.
At e-Bike Barn our Riese & Müller, Tern and GoCycle ranges are overwhelmingly mid-drive — the layout chosen when range, hill climbing and cargo capacity really count.
The Bosch smart system
Latest Bosch bikes use the smart system — drive unit, battery, display and eBike Flow app working as one connected platform. Software updates can add features over time; riding modes are often customisable; and features like walk assist, hill-start assist and gear-shift detection are shared across much of the range.
That connectivity is not gimmickry — it means diagnostics in our workshop are faster, firmware stays current, and you can tune support levels to match fitness, luggage or the commute you face that day.
Choose by riding style
City & commuting — Active Line
Quiet, smooth and barely audible. Up to 40 Nm on Active Line (BDU332Y), with Active Line Plus stepping up torque for hillier towns. Ideal for step-through commuters and riders who want harmonious support in everyday clothes.
All-round touring — Performance Line / PX / SX
Performance Line bridges city and sport (up to 75 Nm). PX adds versatile touring power (~90 Nm). SX is the lightweight compact option (~60 Nm, ~2 kg) when agility matters most.
Trail & sport — Performance Line CX
The benchmark eMTB motor since 2015. Current CX (BDU384Y) is lighter, quieter and more responsive. Optional Performance Upgrade settings in Flow can raise torque on compatible bikes — great for demanding climbs, with a trade-off in range and wear if you push hard every day.
Loads & family — Cargo Line
Tuned for child seats, box bikes and fleet use. Strong start-up assistance helps you pull away when fully laden — the motor family we see on Riese & Müller Load, Packster and Multicharger models in our showroom.
Active Line in pictures
Active Line prioritises refinement over brute force. For Henley commutes, Thames-side leisure rides and town errands, it delivers exactly the relaxed character many first-time e-bike riders hope for — and it pairs beautifully with hub-gear setups and step-through frames.
Performance Line — all-round touring
Performance Line sits between Active Line refinement and CX muscle — up to 75 Nm for mixed terrain, longer days out and riders who want one bike for commute and weekend rides. PX and SX variants extend the family for heavier loads or lighter, more agile builds.
Performance Line CX — power with control
CX uses refined torque, cadence and motion sensors so the bike responds intuitively — power when you want it, not when you do not. Walk assist helps on hike-a-bike sections; optional Bosch eBike ABS adds stability under hard braking on loose surfaces.
Look inside the motor
One reason Bosch mid-drives feel so refined is what happens inside the casing — precision gears, compact motor architecture and decades of development. These cutaway views show why Performance Line CX became the benchmark for eMTB and premium tourers.
Three sensors, one natural feel. Torque measures how hard you pedal, cadence how fast, and an acceleration sensor reads bike movement — together they decide exactly when to add assistance. That is why CX can feel immediate on a technical climb yet relaxed on a towpath cruise.
Cargo Line — built for the heavy days
When the bike replaces a car for school runs or business logistics, Cargo Line delivers the low-speed torque and confident take-off that riders notice most with a full load. DualBattery options extend range for longer days on the road.
Performance Line SX — light and agile
SX suits gravel, fast urban builds and riders who notice every kilogram. If your routes mix tarmac and light trails but you rarely carry heavy cargo, SX is worth a look on a test ride.
Customise support with eBike Flow
The eBike Flow app lets you adjust riding modes on many smart-system bikes — support strength, dynamics and maximum torque within limits set by the manufacturer. Performance Upgrade options on eligible CX models can unlock higher peak torque; we recommend treating that as a tool for occasional climbs, not every commute, to protect range and drivetrain life.
