Bosch System 2 vs Smart System: What's on Your Bike?

Shopping for a used Bosch e-bike — or comparing a current model with one from a few years ago? You will hear System 2 and smart system used interchangeably in adverts. They are not the same, and the difference affects apps, displays, updates and what we can do in the workshop.

Two generations at a glance

Bosch eBike System 2

The previous generation — still widely ridden and fully serviceable. Uses the eBike Connect app (where supported), earlier display families and Gen 4-era drive units including Performance Line CX (BDU374Y). No Flow app ecosystem.

Bosch smart system

Current platform — eBike Flow app, ConnectModule, latest motors (including Gen 5 CX BDU384Y), broader customisation, over-the-air updates and connected security features. See smart system explained.

How to tell which you have

  • App on phone — Flow = smart system; Connect (or no app) = likely System 2
  • Display — Kiox 300/500 and Purion 200 on new bikes point to smart system; older Intuvia or Purion 400 layouts often indicate System 2
  • Motor label — BDU384Y is smart-system Gen 5 CX; BDU374Y is Gen 4 CX (System 2 era)
  • Bike age — most 2023+ premium models from Riese & Müller are smart system; many 2019–2022 bikes are System 2

When in doubt, bring the bike to us or quote the frame number — we can confirm generation before you buy used or plan upgrades.

Can you upgrade from System 2 to smart system?

Not as a simple swap — the smart system is an integrated package of motor, battery, display, connectivity module and software. Retrofitting a full upgrade is usually impractical compared with moving to a new bike designed around the platform.

That does not make System 2 obsolete. Gen 4 CX remains a brilliant motor; we stock parts, perform diagnostics and firmware work daily. Read our motor history for generational context.
