Assistance level is the dial you turn most often on a Bosch e-bike — and on smart-system bikes it goes far beyond four preset buttons. Whether you are commuting on Eco, touring on Sport or pushing eMTB on a Chiltern climb, understanding riding modes helps you match power to the ride and protect battery life.
Modes are set on your display or remote, and on many current bikes customised further in the eBike Flow app. The drive unit reads your pedalling and applies support within the limits of the mode you have selected.
Standard Bosch riding modes
Most Bosch e-bikes offer a familiar ladder of support — exact names and availability depend on motor generation and how the manufacturer configures the bike.
Eco
Lightest assist — ideal for fitness-focused riding, flat commutes or extending range on a long day. You still feel like you are doing the work; the motor just takes the edge off.
Tour
The everyday default for many riders. Balanced support for mixed terrain and distance — what most Riese & Müller Nevo and touring builds feel like on a typical weekday route.
Sport / eMTB
Stronger, more responsive support. Sport suits faster road and gravel riding; eMTB (or Turbo on some setups) delivers maximum trail power for steep climbs and technical sections.
Off / zero support
Ride without motor assistance — useful for diagnostics, warm-downs or conserving battery on long descents. Walk assist remains available where fitted.
Custom modes with eBike Flow

Smart-system bikes often let you create or adjust modes in Flow — changing support strength, acceleration dynamics and maximum torque within limits set by the bike brand. That means a cargo bike can prioritise smooth low-speed take-off while an eMTB can feel sharper on technical climbs.
Manufacturers may also ship preset profiles — Urban, Trekking, Cargo — tuned to how that model is used. We can walk you through what is adjustable on any bike in the showroom.
Performance Upgrade & Extended Boost
Eligible Performance Line CX smart-system motors can unlock higher peak torque via Performance Upgrade — configured in Flow. Extended Boost adds a short burst of extra support when you need it on a steep section.
Both are brilliant tools for occasional hard climbs or heavy loads, but running maximum support all day increases battery drain and drivetrain wear. For daily commuting we usually recommend Tour or a custom moderate mode — save the big numbers for the hills that need them.
Modes and range

Higher modes use more energy per mile — especially with frequent stops, heavy luggage or cold weather. Flow’s Range Control and navigation features can suggest modes along a route so you arrive with charge to spare.

ABS modes are separate
On ABS-equipped smart-system bikes, braking behaviour is controlled by ABS modes (Cargo, Touring, Allroad, Trail and ABS Pro options) — independent of motor assist level. You can run Tour for the motor and ABS Cargo for laden braking, for example.
