Range anxiety is real — but on a well-matched Bosch e-bike, the battery is rarely the limiting factor. Understanding capacity, placement and how you ride matters more than chasing the biggest number on the spec sheet.

PowerTube vs PowerPack

PowerTube batteries integrate into the frame for a clean look and lower centre of gravity — the layout on most Riese & Müller tourers and eMTB platforms we sell. Capacities commonly include 400, 500, 625 and 800 Wh on current smart-system bikes.

PowerPack mounts on a rear rack or frame triangle — still common on some trekking and entry-premium builds where frame integration is less of a priority.

DualBattery for long days

Two batteries — primary plus range extender — are the answer when you routinely carry heavy loads or ride all-day routes. We see DualBattery most on Riese & Müller Load, Packster and Multicharger models where replacing a car is the point of the bike.

What affects range in the real world?

Charging & battery care

Charge regularly — lithium cells prefer partial cycles to sitting flat for months. Top up after rides rather than running to empty every time.

Store sensibly — if you park the bike for winter, leave the battery partly charged (roughly 40–60%) in a cool, dry place — not a freezing shed or hot conservatory.

Clean with care — wipe the battery casing with a damp cloth; avoid pressure washers directly on contacts and mounts.

Use the correct charger — Bosch supplies chargers matched to battery generation. We can confirm compatibility in the workshop.

Cold weather temporarily reduces available capacity — normal behaviour, not a fault. Range usually returns as the battery warms through riding.

When to ask the workshop

Bosch batteries are designed for long service life, but capacity gradually reduces with age and charge cycles — like any lithium product. If range has dropped sharply, error codes appear or the battery will not charge, book a diagnostic. We service smart-system and System 2 bikes and can advise on genuine replacement options.
