Power on the climbs gets the headlines — but day-to-day Bosch brilliance often shows up in the quiet features: pushing the bike up a ramp, setting off smoothly on a hill, or shifting without crunching gears. These assist and convenience functions are built into the drive unit and smart system, and they matter as much as peak torque when you are replacing a car or loading a cargo bike.

Walk assist

Walk assist adds gentle motor drive at walking pace when you are off the saddle — invaluable for cargo bikes in car parks, eMTB on push sections, or any bike up a steep kerb ramp. Activate it from the remote or display (method varies by manufacturer) and keep one hand ready on the brake.

It is not a throttle — speed is capped and the bike expects you to be walking alongside. On a loaded Packster or Load5 it can be the feature that makes heavy daily use practical.

Hill-start assist

Starting on a steep gradient with a heavy bike is awkward — hill-start assist holds drive briefly so you can clip in, find balance and pedal away without the bike rolling back. Particularly useful on tourers and cargo models at junctions on hilly routes around Henley and the Chilterns.

Gear-shift detection

Bosch mid-motors measure pedalling load and briefly reduce drive during shifts — protecting your chain and cassette and making changes feel smoother. It works with conventional derailleur setups and integrates with electronic shifting on compatible builds.

On premium Riese & Müller models with automatic or electronic gearing, the motor and shifter share data for clean, quiet changes under load.

Range Control & smart navigation

Range Control in the eBike Flow app estimates remaining range based on your chosen riding mode, terrain and battery level — and can suggest mode changes along a planned route so you are not caught short on a long loop.

Pair that with understanding battery capacity and DualBattery options and range anxiety becomes much easier to manage.

Automatic light connection

Many Bosch bikes switch lights on when the system powers up and adjust beam behaviour while riding — one less thing to remember on dark winter commutes. Exact behaviour depends on the light set fitted by the manufacturer.
