The Rohloff E-14 brings electronic shifting to the legendary SPEEDHUB 500/14 — 14 real gears, 526% range, and hub durability that has earned its reputation over two decades. On a Bosch e-bike, the story is not just the hub: the E-14 communicates directly with Bosch e-bike systems over the CAN bus so motor torque, shifting and your display work as one coordinated package.
What is the Rohloff E-14?
The E-14 adds a handlebar switch unit and a hub-mounted shifter to the Rohloff SPEEDHUB. One button press shifts precisely; hold the button and the system steps through the range in fast three-gear sequences. At a standstill, auto-downshift returns the hub to a pre-set starting gear — ready for a clean getaway at the lights.
Rohloff also offers the E-14 2.0 app (Android and iOS) for firmware updates, calibration, diagnostics and personal settings — including auto-downshift gear selection and multishift behaviour.
How the E-14 talks to Bosch systems
This is where premium hub-gear e-bikes feel different from a mechanical twist shifter on a motorised bike. On Bosch Smart System bikes, the E-14 uses Bosch eShift / Direct Shifting: the drive unit and hub share data in real time so the motor reduces output torque during every shift — typically within around 180 ms. You feel a silky gear change under load instead of crunching cogs while the motor still pushes.
CAN-bus synchronisation
Motor and E-14 coordinate over the e-bike CAN network. Shift commands, torque reduction and status flow between Bosch and Rohloff — not two separate systems guessing at each other.
Display integration
On Bosch Intuvia, Nyon and Kiox cockpits, the current Rohloff gear appears on the display — permanently or briefly depending on the display. No separate gear indicator required on the bar.
Smart System extras
Auto-downshift at traffic lights (starting gears 4–9) is available with Bosch Smart System. The E-14 is also compatible with Bosch ABS on smart-system builds — rare for a hub-gear platform.
High-torque ready
Rated for Performance Line CX and Speed motors — suitable for S-Pedelec (45 km/h) use where a fragile derailleur would struggle.
